If you are visiting Egypt over the coming months to enjoy a Nile Cruise or are thinking of doing so I think you would be very interested in an excellent article by Jack Shenker in The Guardian yesterday entitled “Nile Delta – We are going underwater” which describes the threat of sea erosion on the coastline of Egypt and how it threatens the livelihoods of those living and working on the Nile Delta.
The article is packed with facts some of which I was totally unaware of including the fact that the Suez Canal was built in the main by forced labour and that two years ago, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change declared Egypt’s Nile Delta to be among the top three areas on the planet most vulnerable to a rise in sea levels.
It is a fascinating article that really illustrates the effects of climate change in the region and one that I think will give you a much broader perspective of the land that you are going to be visiting.
